One closeted, one not: the lives

of two 1930s film stars

Movie Queens

by Claudia Allen Reality Theatre

Reviewed by Darryl Holbrook

Contrary to the scathing reveiw by the mainstream press in Columbus, Movie Queens is a refreshing plunge into the realm of live theatre and quite honestly a joy to watch. I have no idea what planet the reviewers were on but it was not in our solar system and obviously way beyond their cognitive abilities to appreciate a good script and performance.

Movie Queens is a dramatic comedy that examines the ongoing relationship between two famous stars of the silver screen, Adele Montrose and Meg Elliot. Earlier in their careers, both had together shared a nomination for an Oscar and the affection of each other. Now rehearsing cooly opposite each other in a Broadway play of the 80's, their relationship is presented to the audience through flashbacks, often with the past and present being acted out simultaneously on stage.

The camp styles of the 1930's are presented superbly (with the assistance of Frank Barnhat's period costumes) by the younger Adele (Mollie Levin) and Meg (Lori Cannon). The supporting cast provide some very

amusing moments and appear throughout the performance playing multiple roles with the ability to change their costumes as swiftly as the scene changes. Which in some instances is very swift indeed.

Ultimately it is Adele's pursuit of stardom and fame (at all cost) along with the fear of exposing her sexuality publicly which destroy this relationship. The result only leaves Adele a lonely woman playing to her fans but never being true to herself. (A trait I can relate to.)

While rehearsing for their current play, the older Adele (Bobbi Jackson) is forced to come to terms with her feelings for Meg (P.J.Summer). Meg is very assured with her sexuality and has long ago thrown open the closet door to reveal a world of personal freedom. A line which I found amusing and demontrative of the extremes of these two characters is when Meg, upon asking Adele to accompany her to a lesbian bar in the Village, is given the response "I may have one foot in the grave, but I'm not about to set the other into a lesbian bar." What a hoot!

Reality Theatre's Movie Queens is in my opinion a must see. It is thoughally entertaining and well worth the trek in this inclement weather. Do yourself a favor.

Movie Queens is playing Nov. 10-12 and 17-19 at 8 pm. Call Reality Theatre at 614294-7341 for tickets.
